WC Academy Episode 1: Red And Blue

Synopsis

red_and_blue_title.jpg

Cadets Christopher “Maverick” Blair and Todd “Maniac” Marshall are participating in a combat training simulation. Their wingmen, “Viking” and “Archer”, have already ejected or been “killed”. Maniac and Maverick must face off against a wing of kilrathi Dralthi medium fighters and a scout ship. Maniac wants to head directly toward the larger vessel; but Maverick thinks that's a bad idea, being as they are outnumbered and outgunned. Maverick tries to convince Maniac to alter course, but Maniac ignores him. Suddenly, the simulator crashes, leaving the affair undecided. The two exit their training cockpits, arguing over who is the superior pilot and what the appropriate tactics should be.

A young man named Burrows is ordered to repair the simulators.

Later, Maverick and Viking meet up and watch fellow trainees flying their craft. A nervous Maverick, trying to hide his crush for her, asks Viking if perhaps she would be interested in getting together to “study kilrathi battle tactics.” To his surprise and happiness, she says “yes”. But then Maniac shows up to further hassle him over their differing philosophies in battle. This exchange of words culminates with Maniac demanding that Maverick fight him right where they stand. Maverick refuses, as he finds the prospect ridiculous, but Maniac won’t have any of that. Maniac is about to take a swing at Maverick, but is grabbed by fellow cadet Archer. He tells her to stay out of it, but Archer shows her skills and he finds himself being hurled across the room.

Commodore Geoffrey Tolwyn enters the room, interrupting the brawl. He puts these cadets to a test: He assigns two teams, Red and Blue: Maniac as the leader of the Reds; and Maverick as leader of the Blues. This will not be an ordinary training simulation however; these cadets will participate in mock combat in real space. Their Scimitar medium fighters will have their weapons adjusted to only damage shields —not the aircraft or the pilots inside. When a cadet’s shield is depleted, he or she is out.

Before the training mission begins, Burrows secretly contacts a kilrathi by radio. The kilrathi tells him to “transmit the data.” Burrows refuses, saying he must meet them in a nearby nebula and accompany them back to Kilrah, for if he stays where he is, he will be captured as a traitor. The kilrathi objects at first, arguing that the Confederation will surely catch Burrows before he reaches them and the data will be lost. Burrows sways the kilrathi to take him in by revealing that he has modified the “mock weapons” for the upcoming pilot training exercise to be nothing of the sort, setting them to their full power. With real weaponry, Burrows claims, the pilots will be too busy blowing each other out of the sky to notice him escaping.

As the cadets prepare for launch, Maniac once again challenges Maverick… to a one on one duel, but this time in real cockpits. He wants to meet in a nearby nebula, where interference will hide them from the higher-up's. Maverick reluctantly agrees, —he has a plan to teach Maniac a lesson. An overjoyed Maniac exclaims “Let the best pilot win… that would be me.”

They launch. Maverick contacts his second in command, Viking, and reveals his plot,

“I’m meeting [Maniac] for a one on one inside the Nebula, his approach vector will show the location of the Red wing. I’ll transmit the coordinates to you. I’ll keep Maniac busy while you lead a surprise attack…”

Ready to face Maniac and prove himself as the superior tactician, Maverick breaks off from the rest of Blue wing towards the nebula.

In the nebula, a kilrathi scout ship detects them. Apparently, this is the same nebula where Burrows plans to rendezvous with the kilrathi. The officers aboard the kilrathi vessel contact Prince Thrakath, notifying him of the incoming Confed ships. Thrakath is concerned, and warns the officers that they must be wary of treachery from Burrows, for perhaps these ships are part of a trap. He stresses, however, that “…whatever the danger to you and your crew, I will have those Academy files.” The files he seeks —and which Burrows has promised—, he says, “will render their fighter squadrons useless.” Thrakath vows that with that information, the kilrathi will “sweep them from space.”

Maverick is unable to locate Maniac within the fog of the nebula. “Come on Maniac, just like you to be late!” he exclaims in frustration. Suddenly, Maniac appears above him. Maverick then tells his onboard computer to follow Maniac’s ion trail and transmit location updates to Viking. Viking passes on the transmission to her wingmen, and plots an intercept course.

Back at the Academy, Commodore Tolwyn is monitoring the situation with the commander of the Academy. Noticing that both Maniac and Maverick are missing, the Commander reasons that they must have gone off on solo reconnaissance, although he doesn’t understand that choice in tactics. Another officer watching the situation unfold remarks to Tolwyn that Maverick and Maniac were “interesting” choices for team leaders, as “They’re good pilots, but they’re, uh, very competitive.” Tolwyn responds, “I know, that’s why I chose them.”

In the nebula, reversing roles, now Maniac is having trouble finding Maverick. As he cruises through the nebula, taunting his adversary, he is unaware that Maverick is actually very close, hiding by nearby asteroids while he waits for his plan to unfold. “Jazzman”, a member of the Red team, notices a blip on their radar, but suspects it to be Maniac returning from the nebula. He is quickly proven wrong as the Blue team moves in from above, guns blazing! Jazzman becomes alarmed when he is struck by Blue team energy guns and his fighter begins to shake violently, remarking that the guns “…pack quite a punch!” and “…this is too real!” Back at the Academy, Burrows knocks out a security officer guarding a nearby Arrow fighter, stealing it for himself and taking off to meet the kilrathi.

The battle between the Red and Blue teams rages on. Viking gets a lock on Jazzman and unleashes a flurry of gun-fire. As his shields are decimated she realizes that her weapons are doing real damage to Jazzman’s ship! “Get out of there Jazzman!” she yells as his ship explodes. An ejection pod shoots out from the cloud of debris, Jazzman narrowly escaping with his life. Noticing the incident, Archer contacts the Academy, alerting them that although Jazzman’s ship showed full shields at the time of attack, it was still destroyed by friendly fire. Tolwyn orders all fighters back to the Academy. Archer instructs Viking to lead the rest back as she goes into the nebula to search for Maverick and Maniac, who are unaware of the malfunctions with the fighters.

Meanwhile, Burrows arrives at the kilrathi scout ship, data in hand.

When he meets his kilrathi contact, the kilrathi Commander queries,

“I have never met a traitor before, face to face. How does your honor allow you to betray your own people?” Burrows explains,

“Honor? I want revenge. I was a cadet at the academy, before they washed me out. Who are they to tell me I’m not good enough to be a pilot? All the work I put in, and then one bad psych evaluation and it’s all for nothing! Unstable? Hah! What a laugh!”

“Yes… I see.” says the kilrathi, turning and heading through the airlock, closing the door behind him.

Burrows rushes forward and begins pounding on the door ruthlessly.

“What are you doing? We had a deal!”

He barely gets the last word out before the airlock door behind him opens, sucking him into the vacuum of space and sealing his fate. From the other side of the airlock, the kilrathi Commander claims “A man without honor has no reason to live.”

Immediately thereafter, one of his kilrathi underlings contacts him, warning that another Confederation ship is en-route.

That Confederation ship is Archer’s fighter. She picks up something on her radar, and cuts through the nebula's clouds towards the signal, assuming it's either Maniac or Maverick; but instead finds herself staring at a kilrathi scout ship. Before she has time to react, the kilrathi ship fires on her, spinning her ship out of control.

Elsewhere in the nebula, Maverick and Maniac are in the thick of their dogfight. As Maniac closes in, Maverick pleads for him to hold off, as there seems to something wrong with his ship’s shields. Maniac believes this to be a ploy to catch him off guard, and refuses to fall for it. Just before he pulls the trigger, Maniac receives a message from Archer. She has ejected and requires immediate assistance. Maniac and Maverick rush off to find her before the kilrathi do.

While a kilrathi scout ship is searching for Archer, Maverick and Maniac approach her at top speed. Archer tells them that their weapons have been at full strength this entire time, and that they mustn’t get near the kilrathi ship, – for even one shot from it could destroy them instantly. Maniac responds, “Well then… we’ll just have to get the fur balls first!” With approval from Maverick, the two head directly towards the scout ship.

The kilrathi are not taken by surprise, and immediately open fire on the two cadets. Seeing this from her ejection pod, Archer decides that she must buy time for her comrades. She powers up her pod’s engines and heads straight for the kilrathi scout ship, ramming straight into its starboard hull. One of the kilrathi officers is surprised and confused by the attack, and alerts the Commander. While the kilrathi Commander orders his helmsman to take evasive action, he is contacted by Prince Thrakath, who is furious that the Academy data has not yet been transmitted to him. Distracted by the Prince, the Commander is caught unaware as Maverick and Maniac approach from straight ahead, blasting the scout ship with all they have! The kilrathi vessel does not last long, careening towards a nearby asteroid and erupting upon contact, unable to transmit the academy data before its destruction.

Maniac shouts with joy, accompanying Maverick in tractoring in Archer. She exclaims her excitement for her comrades’ first kilrathi kill. Maverick is not so gleeful, though, as he worries about what will happen to them when they reach the academy, and have to face their commanders and explain why they were in the nebula in the first place.

Maverick’s worries are set aside however, as back in the Academy Commander’s office, with Tolwyn nearby, the Commander informs the cadets that they will not be punished for this incident. However, he warns, “But next time you go off to fight your own private duel, bagging an entire kilrathi fleet won’t keep you in the Academy!” The Commander goes on to say that despite his warning, they are not his problem anymore. Commodore Tolwyn informs them that the “brass hats” at Fleet Headquarters have decided that they need “hands-on” training, and are to accompany him back to his ship, the TCS Tiger’s Claw. Tolwyn elaborates,

“You’ll finish your training and fly patrols in our assigned sector. If you’re lucky, you won’t even see a kilrathi ship…” The cadets leave the room, elated over the exceptional news. The Academy Commander turns to Tolwyn. Confused, the Commander asks the Commodore why a man of his stature, who he feels should be an Admiral by now, was assigned the duty of “babysitting a bunch of cadets on a training patrol.” Tolwyn explains,

“Fleet Command is trying to teach me a lesson. I won’t fight the war their way so they’re going to keep me out of combat. Apparently the kilrathi aren’t my only enemies.”

“Don’t take it out on the cadets, Geoffrey.” The Academy Commander pleads as Tolwyn heads out the door. “It’s not their fault.” Tolwyn says nothing, turning his head to reveal a wry smile, as the door closes behind him.

Later that night, out in the launching area of the academy, Maniac again taunts Maverick from within his cockpit as he walks by. He vows that their competition isn’t over, and that someday he’ll prove who the better pilot is. Maverick quips back, “Anytime, anywhere Maniac!” Maniac takes off, Maverick continuing on to his own fighter, calling out to Viking as he approaches.

“Viking?”

“It’s just Victoria now.” She responds.

She explains to Maverick that she is leaving the academy. Disheartened, he asks her why; she explains that when she almost killed Jazzman earlier in the day, she felt something she did not expect. She claims that regardless of who she was killing in combat, she can not handle the idea of taking another living being’s life, even a kilrathi.

She asks Maverick if he will leave as well.

“I can’t let somebody replace me.” He responds, “I knew the risks when I chose to be here.”

She accepts his decision, says goodbye, and walks off into the night. Maverick stays to watch his crush walking away, only for a moment, before donning his helmet and jumping into a nearby Scimitar.

He takes off, leaving Viking behind as he steels himself for the journey to come.
