Ejection Pods

Throughout most of the Terran-Kilrathi War, pilots on both sides who ejected from their craft were forced to confront the cold emptiness of space in nothing more than a flight suit and helmet.

Realizing the vulnerability of their pilots, in the late 2660s Confed and the Kilrathi Empire began utilizing ejection pods. Instead of merely launching a pilot from their cockpit in nothing more than a chair, pilots were propelled safely from their ship's destruction in a cozy “pod”, providing much more protection from the elements than what was previously available.

Besides the extra protection granted by the ejection pods, the pilots also had access to a cockpit like interior, where they could contact and communicate with any friendlies in the area, directing them to a pickup zone. (Or, in many cases, contacted themselves by their commanding officers and chastised for losing a multi-million credit fighter…)

Heart of the Tiger, page 364:

“Shields are failing,” [Maniac] said as he released the missiles, his voice almost matter of fact now. “Looks like you're on your own now, Colonel. For what it's worth, I'm proud I flew with you…”
And then his fighter was gone, too, an expanding cloud of flame and smoke and whirling debris. Blair thought he caught a glimpse of the Excalibur's escape pod boosting clear of the explosion, straining to reach orbital velocity, but he wasn't sure. And even if Maniac had somehow managed to survive that blast, he wouldn't be playing any further part in this battle.
