"A year later..."
From a post at the Vegastrike:Privateer Remake forum:
Btw, just curious but are we sure about the Privateer timeline? This, http://www.wcnews.com/encyclopedia/showrecord.php?id=216 States the game starts in 2669 and the RF starts in 2670? I know it's just a one year difference but if true then the confeds already had Stealth tech. Unless Dilloh is setting this for pre-Privateer time period or at least before RF? Or is that site wrong on the timeline?
My (Monk/chuck_starchaser's) reply:
I dispute wcnews's position on the timeline of RF. Simple mathematics: A horde of facts against just one. The one is the fact that when RF begins, there's a title saying "A Year Later...", which would indeed place us in 2670, after the war. The horde of facts that contradict it are all the references in RF to the war raging on: * Bar rumors saying that "we're losing the war", * "the confies are taking over production at this base", * "I'm packing my bags and moving out of gemini", paraphrasing; plus.. * mentions of carrier losses (TCS Kinney, TCS Winterrowd), * an "entire fleet" lost at Midgard, plus.. * 6th Fleet incursion (under Kahl) that couldn't possibly be discounted as "a warlord raiding party" Plus ***the complete lack of ANY references in RF, to the war having ended**. How would you explain that bartenders know such minutiae as Sandoval hiring privateers in New Detroit, or data theft at Oxford; but all missed out on the war having ended? And there's yet another strong argument: Menesch. In one of his last few breaths he confesses to have stolen your gun, and to have obtained ships from the Kats in exchange for promising them that the gun would not end in Confed hands. The story is believable ONLY if we assume RF is taking place near the end of the war, in 2669, NOT 2670. In 2669 the kats are winning the war so they don't need the gun in order to win; --just preventing the Confeds' getting it is enough for them. But by 2670 they couldn't care less whether the Confeds would have the gun or not; they'd want it for themselves to deal with the Mantu, if anything.
So I consider the "A Year Later" opening screen as a "canon error", which is much easier to explain as a "typo", or momentary lapse or inattention, on the part of the game writers, than to try and retcon the war both: raging on AND having ended...
More on my 2669 timeline here and here.
Notice the links about timing of WC3 and the Winterrowd trip. Both are in perfect agreement and yield a simple formula for timing games based on number of systems crossed, cruising speed, and allowing extra time for missions flown within each system. If we apply that formula to Privateer and RF, it all fits perfectly within 2669, even after allowing for two and a half months for Burrows to trade and upgrade his ship at the start, and ending about 2 months before the Temblor Bomb was dropped.
Solution:
The simplest solution, which I advocate, is to change the opening screen of Righteous Fire to say “A Week Later”. With my timing formula, Privateer ends on 2669.126, and a week later puts the start of Righteous fire on 2669.132. Then, applying the same formula to Righteous Fire, we see it come to an end on 2669.213. That still leaves 54 days before 2669.267, –the day Blair drops the Temblor Bomb on Kilrah.
Any other kind of solution to attempt to integrate RF with the rest of WC would be pretty unpretty: To have RF happen in 2670, all references to the war would have to be removed, mentions of the end of the war would have to be included, Kahl and his 6th Fleet would have to be framed as a renegade warlord, references to the Steltec Drone's destruction as being a “kilrathi superweapon” would have to be removed, renegade warlords would have to be mentioned to explain the presence of kilrathi ships in New Detroit, etceteras. Plus, the story of Menesch and his deal with the cats would have to be rewritten from scratch.
I think my solution is a lot simpler and cleaner.
