The first in the line of the Midway class mega carriers, the TCS Midway is one of the most famous ships in the Confederation fleet. Developed in part by Commodore Christopher Blair, the Midway rolled out for its maiden voyage in 2681. While patrolling Kilrathi space for the renegade Cult of Sivar, the Midway made first contact with the Nephilim, an event which would result in a conflict the likes of which not seen since the Terran-Kilrathi war. Cut off from the rest of the fleet and supplies, the Midway and its pilots were able to turn back the initial Nephilim invasion, shutting them off from Kilrathi space by destroying their wormhole-gate that linked from Nephilim space.

This was not entirely due to the Midway's cutting edge design, as the Midway herself was home to many celebrity Confed pilots. Todd "Maniac" Marshall, Jacob "Hawk" Manley, and even Commodore Blair flew off the carrier (before his death while disabling the wormhole-gate's shields). As well as already established pilots, the Midway was home to a group of fresh recruits which would develop into legends in their own right over the course of the resulting war - Jean "Stiletto" Talvert, Terrence "Zero" O'Hearn, Amber "Amazon" Elbereth, Maxwell "Maestro" Garret, and most notably Lance "Frosty" Casey.

After the initial stalling of the Nephilim invasion, the Midway headed back to Sol sector for repairs. Shortly thereafter, Nephilim ships had been spotted in nearby sectors. The Midway assisted the TCS Cerberus in stopping a Nephilim invasion of Sol.

As of 2701, the TCS Midway had become the Confederation Flagship.
