Venture - corvette (really a cutter, but officially a corvette)
Hypothetical:
A pre-war design, the Venture was originally conceived as a fleet escort duty, corvette sized vessel; but loud demands for recon-in-force and picket duty role crafts shifted the goals at an early design stage. The official classification of “corvette” could not be changed without re-submitting the entire project to Appropriations –a process that could take years; but the true –if unofficial– classification of this vessel is that of “cutter”.
As if to cement its lone wolf role, it was given features for long-term, autonomous operation, as well as atmospheric flight capability. It is indeed the largest ship in the Confederation able to land on, and take off from planetary surfaces; over twice the size of the legendary Minotaur. See also the Cutter corvette file.
