Gunner aboard the Phantom, in 2634, who keeps spitting tobacco on young Hans Maximilian Kruger since his coming aboard in Gainer's World. In the Phantom's last fight with a pair Kilrathi frigates, the hull is breached just before jumping. Hans managed to get his gloves on in time, and his pressure suit is still in one piece; but everyone else aren't that lucky. Igor apparently couldn't find his helmet, and his legs are broken, his pressure suit ripped. Kruger watches Igor die. Not that he won't help him; seems he can't help him, but in any case, he watches him die. At the last moment before dying, Igor gives Kruger a thumbs-up.

(This is, IMO, one of the most priceless moments in Forstchen's writings. Lots to think about, but none of it easily writable.)
