Christopher Blair
Bio
Born in 2630 on Earth, Christopher Blair would become one of the most influential and important figures of the Terran-Kilrathi war. He received his callsign, “Maverick” in friendly sarcasm; During his academy days, he was not perceived as a “maverick”, but rather as the opposite – someone who took regulations very seriously and who flew “by-the-book”.
In 2653, Commodore Geoffrey Tolwyn appointed Blair and his fellow cadets (including Todd "Maniac" Marshall), to the TCS Tiger's Claw for training on the frontlines. (TV series Wing Commander: Academy)
In 2654, Blair and Maniac were officially placed on active duty. For the next several months, they served under the command of Colonel Halcyon, helping fulfill the Tiger's Claw’s mission to push the Kilrathi out of the Vega sector. (Wing Commander) After the success of the Vega campaign, Blair took part in Operation Thor’s Hammer (Secret Missions 1), as well as the Liberation of Firekka (Secret Missions 2).
In 2656, on a mission to destroy the Kilrathi headquarters in the Enigma sector, the Tiger's Claw was ambushed by cloaking Kilrathi fighters and destroyed. Only Blair and a handful of other Tiger’s Claw pilots survived. Blair, out in space defending the carrier, was the only pilot to witness these “stealth” ships. The kind of technology necessary for cloaking fighters was unheard of up to this point in the war, which placed Blair’s loyalty to the Confederation in doubt by his superiors. Geoffrey Tolwyn (now an Admiral) had Blair court-marshaled for the destruction of the Tiger's Claw, but unable to prove that Blair himself was directly responsible, resorted to stripping Blair to the rank of Captain. In addition to his demotion, he was assigned to Carnarvon station, a remote Confed Security installation far from the battle front. Admiral Tolwyn vowed that Blair would never serve on a carrier again.
10 years of service on Carnarvon was interrupted by the arrival of the Confederation flagship, the TCS Concordia. The vessel, under the command of Admiral Tolwyn, had taken damage and lost its fighter support (thanks to a sabotaged flight deck) and sent out an SOS. Blair, along with his wingman and closest friend since his court marshal, Elizabeth “Shadow” Norwood, responded and saved the ship from the attacking Kilrathi force. After the death of Shadow in a subsequent Kilrathi attack on the Concordia, Tolwyn, not having the time to send Blair back to Carnarvon, had him “temporarily” transferred to the Concordia.
Aboard he was reacquainted with old friends from the Tiger’s Claw, such as Paladin, Spirit, Jazz, and most importantly – Angel. Blair also met the Kilrathi defector Ralgha “Hobbes” nar Hhallas, the commander of the KIS Ras Nik’hra who was responsible for the Confederations acquisition of the Dralthi IIs that Blair had flown during the Firekkan liberation. Now serving as a pilot on the Concordia, Hobbes was one of the first pilots aboard to give Blair his trust, ignoring the stigma that had followed Blair since his court marshal. Eventually, Blair came across the same Kilrathi stealth fighters that had destroyed the Tiger’s Claw, and was able to capture the encounter with his flight recorder, once and for all proving his innocence.
After comforting each other over the death of fellow former Tiger’s Claw pilot Spirit, Blair and Angel found themselves drawn to one another and began a love affair. As quickly as their love began, it was put in jeopardy by Jazz, who revealed himself to be the traitor who was feeding information to the Kilrathi and sabotaging the Concordia, and attacked Angel in her office. Blair followed Jazz as he fled the ship in a fighter, leading to a one-on-one dogfight. After an intense battle, Jazz found himself floating in space in an ejection seat, spared from a painful death at the hands of Blair’s guns by none other than Angel herself. Angel tractored Jazz in, claiming that “Justice is decided in the courts, not with particle cannons.” Jazz was held aboard the Concordia while awaiting his trial.
Although he had proven his innocence in the Tiger’s Claw incident, Blair was still restricted from participating in the final assault on the Kilrathi sector HQ. Tolwyn still did not entirely trust him, and was not prepared to let the fate of the attack rest with Blair. Defying his orders, Blair deviated from his patrol, taking on the Kilrathi starbase by himself and destroying it, along with the ship of the heir to the Kilrathi Empire, Prince Thrakhath. (Although his ship was destroyed, Thrakhath ejected, swearing revenge on Blair.) After proving his metal against the station as well as the Kilrathi prince, Tolwyn promoted Blair to the rank of Colonel and had him permanently assigned to the Concordia.
Shortly following his promotion, Blair was transferred to the Special Operations division, where he participated in assisting Kilrathi defectors, as well as putting a final stop to Jazz, who had escaped capture and retreated to a Mandarin base.
In 2669, in the wake of the TCS Concordia’s destruction, Tolwyn assigned Blair (now referred to as “The Heart Of The Tiger” by the Kilrathi, thanks to his enormous kill count and reputation for overcoming the odds) to the TCS Victory. As acting Wing Commander, Colonel Blair led his fellow pilots (once again including Maniac and Hobbes) through various missions. Blair was the first pilot to use the new Excalibur class fighter in the battlefield, using it to defend the Victory in a scramble mission. He also participated in the deployment and unsuccessful defense of the TCS Behemoth. After receiving a threatening communiqué from Prince Thrakath, Hobbes’ secret sleeper agent trigger had been released, leading him to transmit vital weak-points in the Behemoth’s defenses. Hobbes then fled back to Kilrathi space, leaving Blair disheartened, feeling betrayed by a pilot he had put so much trust in, and who had done the same for him aboard the Concordia.
The Behemoth destroyed, Blair, still in space, was confronted by Prince Thrakhath himself, who challenged him to a one on one battle. Attempting to lure Blair into combat with infuriating news, Thrakhath transmitted a video of Blair’s lover, Angel, being murdered at the hands of Thrakhath himself. Angel had been on a secret mission in the Kilrah system, but had been captured and killed with the rest of her team. Although overcome with rage, Blair forced himself to retreat to the Victory as it jumped out-system.
The situation was dire, but all was not lost. An unexpected visit from Paladin brought new hope. Now a Senator, Paladin had been involved with the development of the Temblor Bomb. Paladin explained that the instability of the Kilrathi homeworld left it vulnerable to a weapon that would affect its tectonic plates, shifting and shaking the planet into oblivion. It turns out that Angel’s death had not been in vain, as her secret mission in Kilrah had revealed the ideal place to unload the T-Bomb. Blair, with Maniac and other pilots serving as backup, infiltrated Kilrathi space with the use of stealth technology installed in his Excalibur, getting revenge on Prince Thrakhath and Hobbes before descending to the Kilrathi homeworld and delivering the final blow to the Kilrathi Empire. Blair had put an end to the Terran-Kilrathi war, but at a high price.
Though arriving home a hero, Blair’s heart was heavy as he realized what the war had cost him through the past decades. The destroyer of the Kilrathi and hero of the Confederation had had enough fighting, and decided to settle down with his new love, the Victory’s Chief Technician Rachael Coriolis.
In 2673, Maniac was sent to recall Blair (who had suffered a falling out with Rachael Coriolis) from his new-found farming life on Nephele II back into active service. Blair, given explicit orders by Admiral Tolwyn to go out to the frontier aboard the TCS Lexington and gauge the threat of the Border Worlds, succeeded in revealing one of the most intricate conspiracies in Confed history. By defecting to the Border Worlds, (following in the footsteps of his longtime friend and mentor, Captain Eisen) Blair uncovered to Confed the Gene Enhancement Program, the secret organization – “The Black Lance”, and Admiral Tolwyn’s traitorous ways, proving the innocence of the Border Worlds. After saving the Confederation from another costly and deadly war, this time with its own kind, Blair decided to follow the path of the Flight Instructor, in order to train the next generation.
In 2681, Blair (now a Commodore, apparently deciding that he didn’t want to end his days as a flight instructor) accompanied the TCS Midway on its breakdown cruise. Blair himself helped in the design of the Mega Carrier, and felt it appropriate that he be aboard during its maiden voyage. Naturally, epic conflict being drawn to him, Blair found himself in the beginnings of the Terran-Nephilim conflict, pitting him against the insect-like creatures alongside fellow pilots Maniac and Lance Casey (son of the legendary Iceman). Unfortunately, Blair’s luck had seemingly ran out, as he was killed in the final battle of the initial Nephilim contact, where he failed to return from an on-foot mission shutting down the shield emitters on the wormhole gate that allowed the Nephilim to enter Kilrathi space. He is currently MIA (assumed dead).
